Dairy Facilities
(top of page)

The Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University has two dairy herds – one in Columbus (teaching and research) and one in Wooster (mainly for research). The dairy farm in Columbus is located
on the main campus of the University. The OSU students are trained to complete all aspects of this 100-cow Jersey herd. Cows are milked in a double-8 herringbone parlor built in 2002, and it is equipped with automatic takeoffs and animal identification. Cows are housed in a barn with 100 free stalls. If hands on experience is
what you want, this is the place. Talk about rural urban interface, we live it every day.

Dairy Judging Team (top of page)

Students that have taken the ANIM SCI 207 Dairy Cattle Evaluation course become eligible for selection
for a team to represent Ohio State University. Teams are coached by Bonnie Ayars and compete in 3 to 4 contests annually.

Dairy Challenge Program (top of page)

The North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge is a national contest held annually to inspire students
and enhance university programs. It is a dairy management contest that incorporates the evaluation of all
phases of a specific dairy business in a fun, interactive, and educational forum and is supported financially
through generous donations by industry. An Ohio contest sponsored by Cargill Animal Nutrition also is
held annually whereby teams of 3 to 4 students evaluate the management of a selected dairy farm. The
top 4 students in this contest are selected to represent OSU at the National Contest and are coached
by Dr. Maurice Eastridge. Selected students from the Ohio contest also are invited to participate in the
Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge that is rotated among midwestern states.

Honors Program (top of page)

Selective students are eligible for the Honors Program at Ohio State University. One of the requirements
is to conduct a research project and opportunities for research with dairy cattle are available
(ANIM SCI H683).

Internships (top of page)

Each student in the College is expected to complete an internship. Many opportunities are available from companies and agencies and a few research internships are available in the Department (ANIM SCI 489,
3 to 5 cr). Additional information about the internship program in the Department of Animal Sciences is
available by clicking here or contacting Dr. Pasha Peffer.

Scholarships (top of page)

Thirteen or more dairy-specific scholarships are awarded annually to Animal Sciences Majors. The primary
list of scholarships is provided below.

Alpha Gamma Sigma Foundation - Clair E. Jones Scholarship
Initiated in 1974 by the Alpha-Gamma Sigma Foundation, this scholarship was made possible by a generous gift to the foundation by the late Mr. Clair Jones of Wauseon, Ohio. This award supports an above average student from Ohio with an interest in dairy science, who shows evidence of leadership ability. Preference is given to Alpha Gamma Sigma members.
William J. Brakel Endowed Scholarship Fund in Dairy Science
The William J. Brakel Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by the efforts of former students, colleagues, and friends in recognition of Dr. Brakel's dedication to student advising as an active faculty member at Ohio State. Income generated from this endowment provides scholarships for outstanding dairy science students.
COBA/Select Sires - Wallace Erickson Scholarship
This award was established in 1976 by the Central Ohio Breeding Association Board of Directors in honor of Dr. Wallace Erickson, who served as General Manager of COBA Select Sires. This award supports an undergraduate student emphasizing dairy science. The student should have high ability, demonstrated leadership, and an interest in artificial insemination.

Earl and Wilma McMunn Scholarship in Dairy Science
Initiated in 1999, this scholarship account was established from the estate of Earl McMunn, former publisher of the Ohio Farmer and graduate of the OSU Department of Dairy Science. It is intended to give financial aid to Dairy Science students.
Ohio Agribusiness Association - Dairy Science Scholarship
The Ohio Agribusiness Association Scholarship was initiated in 1987. It was established to interest students in dairy nutrition and the role that the feed business plays in achieving more efficient and cost-effective dairy production. Annual gift provides support to an undergraduate student in dairy science with strong academic achievement, leadership skill, and interest in agribusiness sales/management.
Schuyler M. Salisbury Memorial Scholarships
The dedication and memory of a cherished Dairy Science professor is honored each year with the presentation of the Schuyler Salisbury Memorial Scholarship. This Scholarship was established in 1956 to recognize outstanding students in the study of dairy science. This award is named after a man who taught and inspired those interested in dairying for a period of 40 years. Income provides a scholarship for an outstanding junior or senior student in dairy science. Other criteria are integrity, enthusiasm for dairy science, collegiality, and scholastic performance. The principal recipient of this award is held in high esteem, and their name will be inscribed on a plaque that is displayed on the first floor of Plumb Hall.

Study Abroad Opportunities (top of page)

Study abroad opportunities are offered year round in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. Some of these programs are lead by faculty and staff in the Department of Animal Sciences,
including the programs conducted in Australia, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Veterinary Medicine Program (top of page)

The Ohio State University has one of the leading Colleges of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The Department
of Animal Sciences works closely with CVM to prepare students for application to veterinary medicine.
Students pursuing an Animal Sciences major with interest in applying to veterinary medicine typically enroll
in the Life Sciences minor, which provides a curriculum to complete the prerequisite courses for admission.
The Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club provides a forum for the students to network within the veterinary
profession and build relationships with students of similar interests. In collaboration with the Department of
Animal Sciences, a College of Veterinary Medicine Early Commitment Program has been developed. A
joint program
has been developed for students to complete an Bachelor of Science degree in Animal
Sciences at The Ohio State University and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary
Technology from Columbus State Community College.
