Why Dairy Excel?

Dairy producers in the far western states are rapidly increasing their share of US milk production.  Ohio and most of the midwest have a decreasing share of the US milk market.  Many NE Ohio dairy farmers are not operating in a competitive manner.  Here is a comparison of total milk production in Ohio and Washington State from 1956 to 1992.
Our Mission
Dairy Excel is designed to improve the competitiveness of northeast Ohio dairy farms by on-the-farm application of proven principles of resource management.
Results
In January 1992 we launched Dairy Excel in northeast Ohio with introductory "Managing For Success"  workshops.  Through Spring 1998, more than 350 dairy farm managers graduated from Managing For Success.  About half participated in one of two advanced workshops or an out-of-state tour of well managed dairy farms.  Here is what graduates said about Dairy Excel:

Doug Billman in Wayne County recently expanded from 60 to 175 cows.  He said, "I wouldn't have seriously considered this expansion and couldn't have done it without the help of the Dairy Excel team."

Brain Alger, Portage County, "When you put all the courses together, Dairy Excel has given me a vision of what the future is going to be in the dairy industry and the direction we need to go to remain profitable.  It has helped me to refocus our farm on what we need to do to stay competitive."

John Huddleston, Stark County, "I was really impressed with the (Dairy Excel) workshops.  They really helped us get our goals on track, in problem solving and management practices."

Chris Zaebst, Ashtabula County, "The teaching team was extremely helpful in our farm decision-making process."

Learning Opportunities
The three day "Managing for Success" workshop is required for participation in advanced workshops, tours, and receipt of the "Management in Action" newsletter.

Business Management is the heart of the Dairy Excel curriculum.  Management is planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the business' resources towards the accomplishment of established objectives and goals.

Creative problem solving is at the center of effective management.
